Window Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

Like every other part of your home’s exterior, windows are affected by the elements, and, therefore, they require considerable care. As your local expert on replacement windows and patio doors, Renewal by Andersen® of Nashville shares expert tips on taking care of your windows.

Window Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

TIP: Use Water and a Clean Cloth

If you’re not sure what you should use to clean your windows, err on the side of caution, and use water. Then, wipe it off with a clean cloth. Most of today’s window frame materials (like our own Fibrex® material) can be cleaned with running water, without the use of chemicals. Conventional glass cleaners can also be used. Don’t allow water droplets to dry on the window surface as they could leave spots, which can be hard to remove. Avoid abrasive cleaning materials as they could scratch glass coatings.

Renewal by Andersen replacement windows, French doors, and sliding doors can be equipped with High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass packages. In addition to the special coatings that help reduce the heat that passes through the window, they feature a metal oxide coating that reduces water spots by up to 99% when activated by sunlight.

TIP: Clean Around the Sashes

If your windows have features that allow cleaning around the sashes, use them to your advantage. Dust and dirt can get into areas that might affect window operation, such as tracks or locks. Renewal by Andersen of Nashville has such features integrated into our replacement windows. Our double hung windows have sashes that can be tilted inwards, while our sliding windows have easy-to-remove sashes. Our casement windows feature operator arms that eliminate vertical hinges, which allows you to reach all sides of the sashes. For homes with upper-story rooms, these features eliminate the risks associated with cleaning windows from the outside.

TIP: Avoid DIY Repairs and Modifications

Fixing damaged or hard-to-operate windows should be left to your contractor, especially if it’s still within the warranty. Doing your own repairs could cause irreversible damage or, worse, void your warranty coverage. If you’re unsure of what you should and shouldn’t do with your windows, consult the care and maintenance guide, or contact your window contractor.
